Whenever a new technology comes, it has both advantages and disadvantages, Even with smart meters.
So here is the list of advantages and disadvantages of smart meters.

    Advantages:
    1. Smart meter sends your reading daily which you can see with the help of a mobile app. That is, you can monitor your consumption on a daily basis, which earlier you used to know after a full month when the meter reader used to give you your bill.
    2. You can recharge as many as you want.
    3. In a smart meter you don’t have to pay a reconnection charge to restore the supply after disconnection, while in the old meter, you have to pay the reconnection charge along with the bill.
    4. With a smart meter, the chances of getting your bill wrong are very less. Because the smart meter automatically sends your reading. In this, no one has to type after seeing your reading, which eliminates the possibility of human error.
    5. You can remotely track your usage, balance, and payments online.
    6. It automatically informs the department when the meter gets faulty.
    7. In the old meter, when the house or shop was closed, your bill was made on average, which is not the case with the smart meter.

    Disadvantages:
    1. In the smart meter, the connection and disconnection of electricity depend on the network and server. In such a situation, if at any time your light gets cut off and there is a fault in the network or server during your recharge, then you may have to live without light.
    2. Your bill is not generated as per the average when the smart meter is faulty. But when your meter is repaired or replaced, then the entire bill for the meter defective period is deducted from your balance once. Due to this, your light can be disconnected, and you can get into trouble.
    3. Earlier you used to get 15 working days to deposit the bill after receiving it. Whereas in a smart meter, you have to pay the bill before using it.
    4. Earlier you used to get the hard copy of the bill every month through a meter reader, whereas in smart meter you can only see it online.

When we need an electric power supply for a short period like for a few days or 1 month, 2 months, etc. then we choose a temporary connection. There are many occasions when we need a temporary electricity connection. Like for a fair, function, party, pooja pandal(Worship), construction of a house, etc.
In a temporary connection, the bill is charged at a higher rate than in a permanent connection. But in a permanent connection, there is a minimum agreement period. That is, the permanent connection will be available for at least the minimum agreement period only. Or if you surrender the connection before the agreement period, then you will have to pay the bill for the entire period. This agreement period usually lasts for 1 year.

A unit of electricity, also known as a kilowatt-hour (kWh), is a measure of electrical energy that is equivalent to the energy consumed by one kilowatt of power over a period of one hour.

Simply 1 unit of electricity means 1kWh. It means if we use a load of 1kW or 1000Watt for 1 hour it will consume 1 unit of electricity.

For example, if you have a 100-watt light bulb that is turned on for 10 hours, it will use 1 unit of electricity, because 100 watts x 10 hours = 1,000 watt-hours, which is equal to 1 kWh. Similarly, if you have a 1,000-watt microwave oven that is used for 30 minutes, it will use 0.5 units of electricity, because 1,000 watts x (30 minutes / 60 minutes) = 500 watts-hours, which is equal to 0.5 kWh.

Another example, If we use a 60-watt fan for 20 hours it will consume 1200 watts-hours which is 1.2 kWh or 1.2 units.

Maximum demand is the average maximum load used by the consumer in a month. Here the average period is 30 minutes. But in some states, it is 15 min also. Whatever we use in our home, shop, or industry, their load is measured by the meter. The meter records the average load used every 30 minutes. And it keeps the record of the maximum load of all average loads. Which is called the maximum demand for that month.

For Example, Suppose you are using 10 fans having a total load of 500 watts, an AC having load of 1500 Watts, and 10 tube lights having a total load of 400 watts. Then the meter records the maximum load as 2400 Watts which is 2.4kW. It is the maximum demand. In case two days later you will use some extra load that is 2.5kW then now the meter will keep your recorded demand as 2.5kW. It will erase the old lower demand recorded earlier. In simple, you can say that the meter keeps a record of the maximum load used by the consumer at a time(Actually it is a average of 30 or 15 minutes). That is why it is also called maximum demand.

A digital meter is a type of electricity meter that uses digital technology to measure and record a customer’s electricity usage. Digital meters typically display the current usage in real-time and needs manual meter readings.

On the other hand, a smart meter is a type of digital meter that goes beyond simply measuring and recording electricity usage. Smart meters also have the ability to communicate this usage data back to the utility company, allowing for more accurate billing and easier identification of potential problems or inefficiencies.

Some of the key differences between digital meters and smart meters include:

Communication capabilities: As mentioned, one of the main differences between digital meters and smart meters is their ability to communicate usage data back to the utility company. Smart meters have built-in communication capabilities, such as a built-in modem or wireless transmitter, which allows them to transmit usage data in real-time. Digital meters, on the other hand, do not have this capability and require manual meter readings.

Advanced features: Smart meters often come with additional features that go beyond simply measuring and recording electricity usage. These may include the ability to track energy usage in real-time, monitor energy consumption by appliance, and provide alerts for potential problems or inefficiencies. Digital meters, on the other hand, typically only measure and record usage.

Cost: Smart meters are generally more expensive to install and maintain than digital meters, as they require additional hardware and software to support their advanced features.

Overall, the main difference between digital meters and smart meters is the level of functionality and communication capabilities they offer. While digital meters are a simple and effective way to measure and record electricity usage, smart meters provide a more comprehensive solution that can help customers better understand and manage their energy consumption.

Or If someone has 3 phase meter installed and they reduce their load to less than 5 kW, then instead of three phase meter, they will have to install a single-phase meter. In short, in your case, the meter will not change if you increase the load from 1kw to 2kw.
